Therapeutic Ultrasound
Therapeutic ultrasound uses sound waves delivered through a handheld device placed against the skin.

It may be used as part of a broader physical therapy plan to address pain, tissue irritation or soft-tissue tightness. A gel is applied to the treatment area so the device can move smoothly across the skin.

Therapeutic ultrasound is different from the diagnostic ultrasound used to produce medical images.

It is generally combined with exercise, stretching or hands-on treatment rather than used by itself.
