TENS: Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, commonly called TENS, uses low-level electrical impulses delivered through pads placed on the skin.

Patients often describe the sensation as a mild tingling. The intensity can be adjusted based on your comfort.

TENS may be used to help manage pain and make it easier to participate in exercise, movement training or other parts of your physical therapy program.

Your physical therapist will determine whether electrical stimulation is appropriate based on your condition, medical history and treatment goals.
