Hands-On Physical Therapy

Hands-on physical therapy, also known as manual therapy, includes techniques performed by your APTOR physical therapist to address pain, stiff joints, tight muscles and restricted movement.

These techniques may be combined with exercise, stretching and movement training to help you move more comfortably and effectively.

Joint Mobilization

Joint mobilization uses gentle, controlled movements to help improve the way a joint moves.

It may be used when stiffness or limited mobility contributes to discomfort or makes everyday activities more difficult. Joint mobilization may be appropriate for the neck, back, shoulders, hips, knees, ankles or other joints.

Soft Tissue Mobilization

Soft tissue mobilization is a hands-on approach used to address tight, sensitive or restricted muscles and surrounding tissues.

Your physical therapist may use different types of pressure and movement to help improve flexibility, reduce tightness and prepare the area for exercise or functional activity.

Myofascial Release

Fascia is the connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles and other structures throughout the body. Tightness or restrictions in this tissue may contribute to discomfort or limited movement.

Myofascial release uses gentle, sustained pressure and stretching to address these restrictions and improve mobility.

How Hands-On Treatment May Help

Manual physical therapy may be used to:

  • Relieve pain

  • Improve joint movement

  • Reduce muscle and soft-tissue tightness

  • Improve flexibility

  • Address movement restrictions

  • Make exercise or everyday movement more comfortable

  • Support recovery after an injury or surgery

Hands-on treatment is generally one part of a broader physical therapy plan rather than a stand-alone treatment.

Start by telling us what is bothering you, what activities have become difficult and what you would like to be able to do again. Our experienced team will evaluate your needs and recommend an appropriate plan. Most insurances accepted.
